World War 1 began in 1914 when a gunman assassinated the Austria- Hungary Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This started war between the Allies (Triple Entente) and the Central Powers (Germany and Austria- Hungary.) Over 9 million soldiers and over 7 million civilians died in the first World War. President Woodrow Wilson of the U.S. declared neutrality until 1917, when Germans practiced submarine warfare on neutral ships (England and U.S) and the Zimmerman Telegram was sent to Mexico from Germany to attack the United States. By Wilson declaring the United States in WW1 changed the war dramatically. This is a turning point in history because although the troops for the U.S. fought and had minimal impact, the amount of soldiers caused German soldiers to believe the U.S. had an unlimited supply of troops.
